Fits Sock Company Creates Socks for Active Feet

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Fits Sock Company, you deserve to be introduced. As a division of the Crescent Sock Company, Fits Sock Co. brings well over a hundred years of hosiery experience to their merino wool sock line. That the company still maintains its manufacturing in America, when a lot of American label textile production is being sent overseas, adds a bit of homeland feel to the family-owned company based out of Tennessee.

Prepare to see more of this packaging in your future. Outstanding merino wool socks made by Fits Sock Co.

Fits Sock Company claims to apply what they’ve learned in those hundred years to make the world’s best-fitting socks. That is a bold claim in a world where one-upmanship rules the day, and competition in every industry is now both global, and fierce. Still, every product line under the sun has to have a top dog, and I was curious if the Fits Sock Co.had managed to utilize ‘materials, processes, and quality control far exceeding industry standards,’ as they claim, to create a topnotch product. I was excited at the outset that the socks are made from merino wool, as this fabric is excellent in so many ways – it inhibits the growth of odor causing bacteria (essential where feet are involved!), it dries faster per ounce of material than synthetics, it has excellent temperature regulating ability, and it’s the ultimate renewable resource.

Wearing Fits Socks on a recent camping trip. What you don't see in this picture is bunched material around my toes. Fits are cleverly made in such a way that bunching is non-existent.

After chatting with Wood Talkington at the Fits booth during the Outdoor Retailer Show, he handed me a pair and confidently told me to try them out. I promised to do so the next day. Within minutes of pulling them on the following morning, I couldn’t believe the experience my feet were having. It seemed too much to ascribe to a mere sock. For starters, as I pulled the sock on, it slipped over my heel so snugly and perfectly, it was as if it were custom made for my foot! I could instantly see where the company name originated from – they make a product that fits!

Once both socks were on my feet, I stepped into a pair of running shoes to head to the OR show for the day. Most noticeable was the distinct absence of any bunched up material from the toe seam, which I can usually feel pressing against my big toe and my smallest toe. This might not seem like much of a big deal, but as I travel a lot by foot and always notice that bunching with other socks, I was instantly a fan.

As for that travel by foot, I wondered if Fits socks would live up to what I’d read about them on the packaging. I figured that I would quickly find out, as I am presently training for a double marathon in early September. Since receiving several pairs from Wood and his booth cohorts, I’ve put them to various tests. I’ve had several running sessions, multiple bike rides, two trail running excursions, a camping overnighter, and worn them around town, all in the ten or so days following the OR show.

What do I think? I’ve worn various high performance socks made by many companies over many years, and this is the first sock that’s ever left an incredible impression on me. The seamless design is marvelous, the socks didn’t smell at all after an overnighter (nor after sweaty running sessions), they never needed to be pulled back up because they never slipped down my leg – even after miles of running. And, during all of these activities, I could feel them holding my feet more snugly than any other sock has ever done. This cuts down on hot spots and blisters, which is probably half of the reason that I wear socks in the first place. The cushioning in the heel and beneath the ball of the foot seemed to add a spring to my step; it certainly added a pleasant amount of padding.

Me sitting on a rock at White Pine Lake after a trail running session. Yep, those are Fits Socks on my feet!

As someone who has long suffered the undesirable smell of feet that have been sweating inside ski boots in a synthetic sock all day (and sometimes overnight!), I can’t wait to try Fits socks during my backcountry skiing outings this winter. Until then, I’m looking forward to the upcoming double marathon attempt, and I know exactly which socks I’ll be wearing for that adventure – merino wool socks made by Fits Socks Company, straight out of the Tennessee Valley. These socks fit!

As clean on the inside as on the outside - notice there's no extra threads, knots, or other extraneous material on the right sock, which is inside-out.

  • I bought a pair of FITS socks in Birmingham, Al and haven’t wanted to take them off my feet since! I love trail running in the Black Hills of South Dakota and these are perfect for running the trails. My hubby does ultras and these are great for his long distances. So great to be able to buy great socks from a US company – BUY USA!!

  • Jackie – Agreed on both points. Great socks (for all seasons – their ski socks are awesome, too), and glad they’re American made.
