Businesses come and go, but it’s always sad to see one with a long and colorful history go down the tubes. Fortunately in the case of struggling Lowe Alpine, a new home has been found as of July 8th, 2011, saving this venerable company from extinction. Recently acquired by Equip Outdoor Technologies LTD, a United Kingdom based company with multiple quality brands under its umbrella, Lowe Alpine should now have the backing to count itself among the surviving brands of the world.
Not to be confused with Equipe Sport, Equip Outdoor Technologies Ltd. was founded by Matt Gowar in Alfreton, UK, in 1993. Mr. Gowar continues to manage the company, which at this point counts several prominent outdoor brands amongst its holdings.
It’s often a struggle to retain an illustrious brand’s quality and identity when it lands under new ownership or management. One need only be familiar with the Cloudveil story to see that these changes aren’t always for the best. But, like many stories, Lowe Alpine’s was in danger of going away permanently after Italian banks forced the former, latest Italian owners of Lowe Alpine into ‘concordato’ protection from their creditors.
Lowe Alpine will now cross the waters (and the Alps..) from Italy to find itself headquartered in Kendal, Cumbria (in the United Kingdom), about 100 kilometers north of Manchester.
Matt Gowar and his team aim to re-establish the Lowe Alpine clothing line lickety-split, as well as keep the backpack division functioning.
It will be interesting to see how the acquisition fares. Equip Outdoor Technologies Ltd. has been growing rapidly, fueling that growth with other quality name brand acquisitions – namely, of Rab and Podsacs, and now Lowe Alpine. First formed in Boulder Colorado, in 1967 by the legendary and accomplished Lowe brothers, the company now stands a chance at retaining, and even improving upon, its illustrious heritage. As CEO of a growing umbrella, Matt Gowar has his work cut out for himself and his team.
