169% YOY (Year over Year) Growth Rate

By my count, the second inaugural Skin the Turkey rando race grew to 35 participants from the baker’s dozen of 13 that turned out on Thanksgiving last year. That herculean, dramatic increase of 169% year over year is a result anyone in any industry would be proud of.

The grand unveiling of the Wasatch Skimo suits.

Interestingly, only 5 or 6 of the originals from last year’s turkey burner showed up. That seems to indicate that knowledge of the Wasatch’s ‘underground’ and largely informal rando race series has spread far and wide. Nifty, to use a single word that doesn’t get a lot of airtime. It also shows that interest in moving lighter and faster has Continue reading ’169% YOY (Year over Year) Growth Rate’

Wasatch Citizen Series Race Calendar 2012/2013

As things in Utah go, I thought the Wasatch Citizen Skimo Series was well done last year except for one aspect: the somewhat sporadic and random nature of the scheduling. Fortunately, that problem won’t be a factor this season, as the entire season’s calendar has just been put up. That should help those folks who do best when they’ve got some time to plan around schedule conflicts..

In all its glory, feast your eyes on the 2012/2013 Wasatch Citizen Series Skimo Race Calendar. Sorry to say that it’s one improvement at a time, folks. There are not going to be any shirtless, spandex bottomed pics of various racers to accompany the calendar. At least, not this year. Too bad; word has it shirtless calendars are a hot item in Salt Lake City…

6:00pm Tuesday, January 15, 2013: Back to evenings. At Brighton.

7:00am Tuesday, January 22, 2013: Outdoor Retailer is in town and with it arrives a lot of out of state competition! Team Wasatch was handed their collective butts last year (depending on how you score the morning), let’s see how it turns out this season. Don’t let the early morning school day put a damper on your race, request this one off now! Location To Be Announced.

6:00pm Tuesday, February 5, 2013: Again back to evenings. Figure it will be chilly. At Brighton.

6:00pm Tuesday, February 19, 2013: Evening. Brighton. Think hot chocolate.

6:00pm Tuesday, February 26, 2013: Evening. Don’t get lost, this one is at… Brighton. You knew that. Final ‘informal’ race before the Powder Keg.

As was the case last year, this is a relatively informal and free race series. It’s open to all. Count on a diversity of race formats. Bring a helmet and a headlamp. Last, don’t let the word informal fool you; the competitive spirit is alive and well at these races.

2013 Powder Keg

5:30pm Friday, March 8, 2013: Wasatch Powder Keg Short Race. At Brighton.

7:30am Saturday, March 9, 2013: The Wasatch Powder Keg. Brighton Ski Resort hosts.

7:30am Sunday, March 10, 2013: Wasatch Powder Keg Technical Teams Race. Location To Be Determined.

The Powder Keg isn’t free but the price of admission does garner you a chance to win prizes. You’ll also receive an instantly commemorative t-shirt. This year the PK turns into a three day event, so there should be something for everyone.

Get out there and get faster!

Encore

How does that saying go – You can take the racer out of the race, but you can’t take the race out of the racer? Err, something like that. That in mind, for anyone who hasn’t heard, there is another of the low key, informal, and free rando races coming up this Friday, April 20th. Still at Brighton, however, a slight change as the starting time will be earlier than the Thursday night fiestas; plan to be racing at 5:30 p.m. Friday instead of the usual 7 p.m.

Not sure if it’s purely racing (with this crowd, it might be silly to expect otherwise) or a group ski, but the plan appears to also include a BBQ, so bring some edibles and something to sit on afterwards if that’s your style.

If you’ve been sitting in the wings all season long, wishing that the races were on a different night than Thursday so you could attend, now is your chance. Come on up to Brighton for what may be the last Wasatch rando race of the season. Yes, the last race already happened a while ago; but please refer to the first sentence of this post…

CAMP Speed Helmet Review

Take a look at the helmets at any rando race starting line, and you’re likely to see several dark, yet bright, green helmets protecting the heads of some toeing the line. The CAMP Speed helmet isn’t quite ubiquitous, but it’s an increasingly common sight, both at races and simply out and about in the mountains. The Speed helmet is gaining popularity presumably because it offers those attributes that ski mountaineers prefer: safety in a lightweight and comfortable package.

CAMP bills the Speed as the world’s lightest UIAA certified climbing helmet. On my scale, it weighs a bit more than represented, tipping the scale at 8 5/8 oz., or 245 grams. CAMP claims 210 grams, so perhaps they weighed theirs – it’s a one size fits all model, at 56-62 cm head size – without the additional padding that lines the top of the helmet, the adjuster strap, and the chin strap. Regardless, the helmet weighs several ounces less than many competing models, while Continue reading ‘CAMP Speed Helmet Review’

Pie Night

As has been the case throughout this winter, last night was pie night. Pumpkin pie, specifically. Some of you know it as the Brighton rando race night, but I suspect some people show up hoping to win a pie. And every week, a few people do. The racing is almost secondary. Almost.

Pie, beer, water, Molly Green's, prizes, nachos, people hanging out - it's more than just a race..

This week Jared didn’t pull any stunts (illegal by official race standards) as he has before, and Continue reading ‘Pie Night’

Citizen Race Series Evolution

Otherwise intelligent people continue to debate over the concept of human evolution. The evidence that the human species is changing over time seems pretty clear cut; our skeletal structures are obviously different than in the past (we’re taller on average, for example). However, as in all things, it’s possible to be wrong on either side of the argument. An anti-evolution person could hold up the recent human perpetrated SkiLink folly as a great indicator of human regression. Hmm, maybe humans are not evolving after all…

One bit of recent evolution seems undebatable. That regards the first year of the Citizen Series rando races hosted irregularly at Brighton Ski and Snowboard Resort this season. Attendance is growing solidly. Precise numbers are lacking, since there’s always someone at their car, ducking into the woods to admire Continue reading ‘Citizen Race Series Evolution’
