Encore

How does that saying go – You can take the racer out of the race, but you can’t take the race out of the racer? Err, something like that. That in mind, for anyone who hasn’t heard, there is another of the low key, informal, and free rando races coming up this Friday, April 20th. Still at Brighton, however, a slight change as the starting time will be earlier than the Thursday night fiestas; plan to be racing at 5:30 p.m. Friday instead of the usual 7 p.m.

Not sure if it’s purely racing (with this crowd, it might be silly to expect otherwise) or a group ski, but the plan appears to also include a BBQ, so bring some edibles and something to sit on afterwards if that’s your style.

If you’ve been sitting in the wings all season long, wishing that the races were on a different night than Thursday so you could attend, now is your chance. Come on up to Brighton for what may be the last Wasatch rando race of the season. Yes, the last race already happened a while ago; but please refer to the first sentence of this post…

CAMP Speed Helmet Review

Take a look at the helmets at any rando race starting line, and you’re likely to see several dark, yet bright, green helmets protecting the heads of some toeing the line. The CAMP Speed helmet isn’t quite ubiquitous, but it’s an increasingly common sight, both at races and simply out and about in the mountains. The Speed helmet is gaining popularity presumably because it offers those attributes that ski mountaineers prefer: safety in a lightweight and comfortable package.

CAMP bills the Speed as the world’s lightest UIAA certified climbing helmet. On my scale, it weighs a bit more than represented, tipping the scale at 8 5/8 oz., or 245 grams. CAMP claims 210 grams, so perhaps they weighed theirs – it’s a one size fits all model, at 56-62 cm head size – without the additional padding that lines the top of the helmet, the adjuster strap, and the chin strap. Regardless, the helmet weighs several ounces less than many competing models, while Continue reading ‘CAMP Speed Helmet Review’

Pie Night

As has been the case throughout this winter, last night was pie night. Pumpkin pie, specifically. Some of you know it as the Brighton rando race night, but I suspect some people show up hoping to win a pie. And every week, a few people do. The racing is almost secondary. Almost.

Pie, beer, water, Molly Green's, prizes, nachos, people hanging out - it's more than just a race..

This week Jared didn’t pull any stunts (illegal by official race standards) as he has before, and Continue reading ‘Pie Night’

Citizen Race Series Evolution

Otherwise intelligent people continue to debate over the concept of human evolution. The evidence that the human species is changing over time seems pretty clear cut; our skeletal structures are obviously different than in the past (we’re taller on average, for example). However, as in all things, it’s possible to be wrong on either side of the argument. An anti-evolution person could hold up the recent human perpetrated SkiLink folly as a great indicator of human regression. Hmm, maybe humans are not evolving after all…

One bit of recent evolution seems undebatable. That regards the first year of the Citizen Series rando races hosted irregularly at Brighton Ski and Snowboard Resort this season. Attendance is growing solidly. Precise numbers are lacking, since there’s always someone at their car, ducking into the woods to admire Continue reading ‘Citizen Race Series Evolution’

‘Wasatch versus the World’ Race

The world was invited; several players from Colorado, one guy from Idaho, and the usual assortment of Wasatch characters showed up. (pretty good for a free race series put together on a budget of .. of .. well, about three winner’s pies per race, usually). ..And the out-of-towners pretty much handed the locals their collective butts, walking away with the first, second, and third place finishes. Guess Wasatch skiers need to work a bit more on speeding it up. And that’s the basic point behind the Wasatch Citizen Race series. Next race comes up on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 at 7 p.m. Will you be there?

Brief details:

  • Four of us headed up early to put in a skin track since we’d had this unusual and quite rare white substance fall out of the sky overnight.
  • When finished, we stood in the parking lot waiting for everyone to show up. A few minutes before race start time of 7 am, no one had showed. For a second we thought it was a bust, then realized that it was more likely that everyone was crawling very slowly up the canyon behind someone driving quite slowly. A minute or two later, the procession arrived, led by a slow truck.
  • I counted right around 30 racers; not bad for a snowy, end-of-week workday.
  • Lost track Continue reading ‘‘Wasatch versus the World’ Race’

Threesome

After three separate ski outings in the last 24 hours, I’m beat.

Slid in a couple of uphill laps at a decent pace at Brighton with partners Jon Swain and Jason Borro. Headed home, ate, got a few things done, and then it was time for round 2 at maximum speed.

Jon and Jason ham it up at the top.

Swain heads up cheerily during one of several laps.

This might be as exciting as it gets this season in the Wasatch. J-Bo handles some groomer. Notice the dirt in between the trees.

A OK grooms some of his own. Haven't spent as much time on groomers as I have this season, since high school. Ouch.

In a (rare?) twist of irony, Continue reading ‘Threesome’
